Long tradition of weaving

Morocco has a very long tradition of weaving some of the most beautiful carpets in the world. For thousands of years the Amazigh tribes have been weaving wonderful Moroccan carpets which are, in fact, chronicles of the oral history and age-old culture of this people of proud warriors imbued with generosity, friendliness and compassion. For several centuries, the women of the tribes have hand-knotted woollen carpets from the sheep they raised in the Atlas Mountains. The tribes are still present in the mountains today, and the know-how is still transmitted from mother to daughter.

Moroccan carpets have unique patterns and colours, as they are handmade without following a fixed pattern. The weavers weave into the carpets their interpretations of the experiences and important events of their lives; symbols of love, nature and happiness are frequently found on Moroccan carpets. The naturally strong colours, such as blue, red, orange, yellow and purple, are taken from plants and berries, such as henna, pomegranate, fig and tea leaves that grow in the Atlas Mountains. The natural black colour comes directly from the wool of sheep and goats in the mountainous regions.

The women of the different Amazigh tribes decide on their own patterns, colours and carpet designs, so no two carpets are alike.

Three different types of Moroccan carpets dominate, they are furniture jewels and real works of art to be collected :

The Beni Ouraian carpet

Azilal's carpet

The Boucherouite carpet
