The artistic symbolism of the carpet

The designs are a combination of indigenous motifs, those adapted from Islam and those from other African cultures. The language of the drawings identifies the village and the lineage of the woman. The patterns symbolize energy, God's blessings, power and protection. The spiritual power and protective properties of these symbols are supposed to ward off the evil eye and evil in general.

In Morocco, the symbols of the Moroccan carpet have millenary roots and are part of rural folk art. The carpet is the exclusive work of the women who work their time and their house, always with a utilitarian purpose, since this carpet will be at the same time a blanket, a mattress, a decorative curtain for the celebrations.

The carpet is in no way intended for commercial use, and it is only disposed of out of necessity. The work is rustic, the decorative themes, mainly geometric patterns and symbols are left to the weaver's free appreciation, which explains its originality, richness, diversity and freshness.

The Amazigh carpets occupy a particular and predominant place in Moroccan craftsmanship. They are distinguished by their great variety and originality. Decorated with floral motifs, they are characterized by the density of their weaving and the delicacy of their composition. The repetitive motifs frame a central surface decorated with medallions or straight lines. They contain at least seven bright colours that have a magical meaning and a protective and saving purpose.
