Amazigh Tattoos - Tattooing has a long and complex history in Africa. The Amazigh tribe, in particular, has been practicing tattooing of symbolic designs for centuries. Tattoo designs range from animal and plant figures to spiritual and abstract motifs.
These tattoos have been used for many different purposes, but almost all of them are seen as a way to protect oneself from evil spirits or to get away from them. Tattoo designs are found in abundance on period Moroccan carpets. Berber women are the ones who weave, passing on the patterns and weaving techniques from mother to daughter. Traditional Moroccan Berber motifs include checks, triangles, zigzags, crosses and stars.
